It's all about what you want in life

Gut Check:

Last week, a younger coworker commented to me that he was surprised I took the job I'm currently in "because of my longevity."

Side eye. I sort of felt that one right in the ribs.

My response: "It's all about what you want in life, and I am exactly where I want to be."

And that's a true story.

But it hasn't always been easy.

I've struggled with my sleep schedule these past few weeks, trying to find the hours that will suit me best as I settle into the overnight shift. I think my "longevity" might be working against me in this endeavor. I'm not in my 20s anymore when it seemed a lot easier to live from midnight to 8am. Thank you, Simply Sleep.

And then there's the inevitable and unavoidable learning curve in any new job. The programs I know, the policies I'm picking up as I go. I haven't melted down yet, and I don't expect to.

My Memphis:

My Memphis this weekend was, in a word, awesome!

It started with a walk down the Shelby Farms Greenline, which conveniently and dangerously winds right past a Starbucks. Iced vanilla latte, it is!  My friend Krista and I promptly re-consumed any calories we might have burned off on our stroll. Typical enablers.

By the time afternoon rolled around, I was graced with a surprise visit from an old friend who happened to be in the neighborhood. She brought over some Abner's chicken for herself and shared her Rice Krispy treat with me. As she once joked when I left her the last Diet Coke in the fridge, "I know class when I see it." Right back atcha, sister. We're really fancy.

Saturday was all about stuff going on around town. Friends and I fueled up with lunch at Cafe Ole in Cooper Young. Sitting on the front patio under a shady tree, enjoying cold drinks and a warm breeze, queso and shrimp quesadillas. It doesn't get much better.

We hopped downtown to the Choose901 popup shop at the Visible Music College and snapped up a couple of t-shirts to prove we're local. I love wearing my city pride on my sleeve. It's a habit I picked up in Cleveland, thanks to GVArtwork and Cleveland Clothing Company.

Next stop, the Vollintine-Evergreen Artwalk, one of two art shows going on in midtown.

As the day progressed, more friends joined the crowd. I walked away with a necklace from Virginia Fisher, who makes incredible metal works.

On to Overton Square for Art Squared. That ended with more friends and more outdoor sitting with cold drinks and good times.

Ever "Ride the Roo"? I tried, but the bus with a giant kangaroo on top that runs between Overton Square and Cooper Young never drove past the stop I was standing at! So yes, I took a $9 Uber ride one mile back to my car. Yes, I could have made it on my own steam, but sadly not all of midtown is pedestrian friendly after dark.

Sunday found me at The Second Line, a Kelly English restaurant, where I found pimento cheese fries with crawfish and andouille sausage. I also ordered something called Eggs Sardizzle. That's eggs sardou if you are not fo shizzle. I would go back any day of the week for the bloody marys alone! A Louisiana boy cooking up my favorites? Yes, please! Hey Kelly, let's talk about our home state sometime over some Natchitoches meat pies and an assortment of groceries!

Again, it's all about what you want in life.
